WINE & SPIRITS February 2003

20/02/2003
92 Barbarsco Maria di Brun 1999

Romano Marengo makes this bottling from selected, late-harvested nebbiolo grown at his 2.4 acre estate vineyard. Dark and somber at first, this is gigantic on the palate and takes its time before offering a range of flavors:Truffles seem to grow out of the tannins, the dark cherry flavor is almost denser than fruit, mearier, like good salami. Then it lasts with an intrigiung touch of orange oil and almond oil, essences drawn our of the power and grip of the wine.Best for long cellaring, but modern enough to assuage those who like
their Piemont reds young.
